The museum is housed in the former Sint-Jansgodshuis. The building from 1555 is one of the few in Ieper that not completely was destroyed in the First World War. The Stedelijk Museum presents the ancient history of the city by means of paintings, prints, maps and original photographs. You also get an overview of the fine and applied arts from the 16th century. Paintings, sculptures and prints alongside tin, silver and ironwork. Jewel in the crown is the extensive collection of art from the Ypres female painter Louise De Hem (1866-1922).
