Franz von Stuck´s villa (built in 1897/ 1898) combined luxurious interiors with an impressive artist’s studio and private living quarters, and was celebrated as a modern, albeit unconventional sensation by Stuck´s contemporaries. At the Paris World’s Fair in 1900, the furniture which the artist had designed specially for his villa was awarded a gold medal. In 1915 the building process ended with the addition of a remodelled façade as well as a spacious wing housing a large studio and staff accommodation. Only few buildings of historic importance offer a similar mix of design, beauty and mystery to compare with the Villa Stuck – according to Paul Klee, a student of Stuck´s, the mansion was “frighteningly wonderful”, its overriding principle being that of a “Gesamtkunstwerk”, all of a piece, the amalgamation of life, architecture, art, music and theatre into one aesthetic whole.
In the 20th century, after the artist´s death, the Villa Stuck was put to variuos uses. Since 1922 it has housed a Munich municipal museum. From 1998 to 2005 the Villa underwent restoration and now the complex of buildings has regained its former magnificence. Exhibitions of art from around 1900, as well as of modern and contemporary art, make the mansion a unique location to experience art.
