Kostroma State Union Art Museum

The foundation of the Museum in Kostroma took place in 1891 and was connected with the activities of the Kostroma Province Academic Archival Commission. In 1913 the Commission took its seat in the building of the Romanov Museum erected by the celebration time of the tercentenary of the House of Romanov. The new building was opened in the presence of the imperial family. In spite of reorganization and of the formation in 1958-1966 of two museums the historic succession was not lost. In the course of all the 20 th century the museum fund was increased by unique things: paintings and drawings by Yephim Chestnyakov, the collection of weapons that had belonged to the noble family of Cherevin, Gennady Ladyzhensky?s eastern collection et al. In 2005 two formerly separated parts: "The Kostroma State Arts Museum" and "The Kostroma United Historical & Architectural Museum Reserve, The Ipatiev Monastery" were integrated. The new museum obtained the name: The SCE (State Culture Establishment) "The Kostroma State Historical, Architectural & Arts Museum Reserve".
