Located in Candie Gardens, a late 19th century pleasure garden in St Peter Port. When its was opened in 1978, it was one of very few purpose-built post-war museums in Britain. The present permanent displays interprentig the natural and human history of the island have been augmented by a new permanent art gallery. It also contains a 'Cabinet of Curiosities' display drawing on some of the museum's historic collections. The collection database currently hold catalogue records for more than 40000 museum objects including paintings, drawings, watercolor paintings, butterflies, minerals, archaeological and military objects.
