The Charterhouse of Aula Dei, known in Spanish as the Cartuja de Aula Dei is a Carthusian monastery located about 10 kilometers north of the city of Zaragoza in the province of Aragon.
It was founded in 1563 by Hernando de Aragón, archbishop of Zaragoza and grandson of the Catholic Kings. The architecture of the cloistered monastery was designed by the MartÃn de Miteza to house thirty six monks. This monastery, like most in Spain, was closed in 1836, and the monks expelled. The monastery was reopened in 1901 by monks from France.
The major interior decoration are large frescoes on the life of the Virgin (1772–1774) by Francisco Goya and his mentor Francisco Bayeu. Only 7 of the original 11 frescoes remain. The frescoes and the interior, as would be expected for a cloistered society, is open to selected visitors only for a few hours each week.
