The Berlin Gallery found its permanent location in 2004 in a fitting Modernist setting, next to the Jewish Museum, in a former glass warehouse. This Modern Art Gallery first came into being in 1975 in former West Berlin as a cultural association – its mission was to be a showcase exclusively for art ‘made-in-Berlin’.
This is a unique, Berlin-focussed, multi-disciplinary collection bringing together Fine Art, Photography and Architecture. Local in focus and international in scope, it covers homegrown artistic talent and movements, including painters such as Max Liebermann and the Berlin Secessionists and Expressionists Otto Dix, Georg Grosz and Hannah Höch. Other works on exhibit are from the 1920s Berlin Russian as well as contemporary conceptual art and multimedia installations. The museum’s archive provides specialist information for academic research. Lectures, readings and film screenings are part of the ongoing programme.
