Now known as the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, the Royal National Hungarian Academy of Music was first established by Ferenc Liszt on November 14, 1875. In January 1919 it became the College of Music, and in 1925 it was named after its founder. In the course of its 128 year history, artists and masters such as Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály, Jenő Hubay, Ernő Dohnányi, Leó Weiner, Dávid Popper, Bence Szabolcsi, Sándor Végh, Imre Waldbauer, Ede Zathureczky, and many more, studied and taught here, contributing to our artistic legacy. For further research, we suggest that you read the book called Great Professors and Famous Students, which can be found in the Central Library of the Music Academy.
The mission of the Music Academy is based upon the principles and traditions of its founders and of the masters of artist training who supervise the professional, aesthetic and emotional development of composers, performing artists and instructors. Each member of the Academy's faculty is highly qualified to fulfil his or her role, possessing: a deep understanding of both national and universal culture, especially with respect to the art of music; a broad-minded and relevant musical experience; a high level of professional knowledge; advanced professional skills in the fields of performing, composing, music history, and church music; and a comprehensive intelligence in related fields, including the ability to speak foreign languages. Because of the unparalleled level of training offered at the Music Academy , its official name is now the Ferenc Liszt University of Music.
The Music Academy has five buildings in the city of Budapest. The central building, built in 1907, stands at the corner of Király Street and Ferenc Liszt Square. This is the home of higher education and training and a rich concert life. The Ferenc Liszt Memorial and Research Center can be found in the so-called " Old Academy " on Vörösmarty Street. Musical students are trained to become teachers at the Budapest Teacher Training College of the Music Academy. The building of the present Teacher Training College is the former National Music School on Semmelweis Street. The secondary school, Béla Bartók Secondary Grammar and Technical School of Music, is located on Nagymező Street. The student dormitory hostel, Béla Bartók Dormitory, is on Városliget Avenue.
