Help texts

GENERAL

TerminArtors is a fairly complex website with huge amounts of data and advanced searching capabilities. Despite its complexity, we believe it is structured in a way so that newcomers and less experienced users will also easily find the items they are looking for. This help text provides a detailed explanation of all the functions of this site and enables users to enjoy it to its fullest potential.

1. BASIC STRUCTURE OF THE SITE

The structure of the site remains basically unchanged all throughout so it is worth getting familiar with it. On the top of the page you find links to the personal functions (login – my mail – my galleries – my blog – help – registration). To access these functions you must register and log in to the site - you can do so by clicking the appropriate link at the top of the page. When logged in this top menu will change slightly  (my account – my mail – my galleries – my blog – help – logout) to reflect your current status (See 8. Registration and login).

The main menu (Paintings – Artists – Museums – Community – Fun – Art) links you to the basic functions of the site. When you click any of the main menu items they will turn red so as to provide visual feedback of which is currently active. Clicking any of the main menu items will in most cases display a vertically organized sub-menu on the left side of the screen. This vertical menu provides access to advanced listing and search capabilities.

You will find a simple search tool listed under the main menu. First, use the pull-down menu to select a search category (among paintings, artists, museums or art sections). After selecting the category, type the word, or phrase  you wish to search for in the search field (at least 3 characters) and click "Search". If you type in more than one word the search engine will display results that contain all the words ("AND" logical relation). You will find more advanced search options under the Paintings, Artists and Museums menus.

On the bottom left side of the screen you again find links to some of the personal functions (login – my mails – my galleries – my blog) so that you do not have to scroll back to the top to access them. This menu will also change to reflect whether or not you are logged in.

On the bottom right, you will find some miscellaneous information about the site and our company (about us – terms of use – privacy policy – press room – contact – help). Make sure to read the terms and conditions along with the privacy policy before using the site.

2. THE PAINTINGS MENU

Large databases require powerful search tools in order to be manageable. Our site features several search options from the very basic to the rather advanced.

2.1. Searching in the paintings menu

After clicking the PAINTINGS tab in the main (horizontal) menu, a vertical menu will be displayed on the left side of the page. Click "Search" to see several options for searching among uploaded paintings.

By artist: Click a letter in the alphabet to display the list of artists whose names begin with that letter. Usually, artists are listed by their last names but in a few cases but there are a few popular exceptions (e.g. Leonardo da Vinci is listed under the letter "L" although Leonardo was his first name). After clicking the name of an artist you will see a thumbnail gallery of all of his or her paintings. Thumbnails are in alphabetical order indexed by title.

Below each thumbnail you will find some important details (artist, title, date, movement, theme, and technique) about the painting. You can also check the number of views and the number of votes. If you click any of the thumbnails, or the title on the painting below it, you will be directed to the painting's profile page (See 2.4. Painting profile). If you click the name of the artist you will see the artist's profile page (See 3.4. Artist profile).

After a few seconds a small thumbnail gallery appears with the paintings dominated by the selected color. Move the cursor to another color to get a different thumbnail gallery. Use the adjuster on the left side of the color bar to change the brightness.

Click any point on the color bar to list a thumbnail gallery with all the paintings featuring the selected color. 2.2. Stats

After clicking the PAINTINGS tab in the main (horizontal) menu, a vertical menu will be displayed on the left side of the page. Click "Stats" to see some interesting statistical data about the paintings.

Views/Votes/Uploads: Under this section you can list the most recently uploaded paintings ("Latest uploads"), the ones that were viewed by the largest number of visitors today, this week, this month or ever ("Most viewed"), the paintings that received the most visitor ratings ("Most rated"), the ones for which the highest votes were given by visitors ("Top rated") and the ones which were most often featured in visitors' galleries ("Featured in gallery").

Tags: Tags are relevant keywords associated with a painting. A single painting can have several different tags and a single tag can be associated with several paintings. Under the tags section, you can list the most frequently used tags („Most frequent”) and the tags (keywords) that visitors most often searched for („Most searched”). In both cases, the size of the font represents tag frequency. In other words, the larger the tag, the more frequently it has been used. Click on the tags to display all the paintings associated with it.

Movements/Themes: Under this section you can view various lists of the most popular artistic movements and themes on the site. Click „Most Viewed Movements” to see the artistic movements that were most popular with visitors today, this week, this month, or ever. Click „Most Frequent Movements” to view a list of all the artistic movements ranked by the number of paintings uploaded in each movement. Similarly, click „Most Viewed Themes” to see the themes that were most popular with visitors today, this week, this month, or ever. Finally, click „Most Frequent Themes” to view a list all artistic themes ranked by the number of paintings uploaded in each theme.

Locations: The location statistics will show you the countries, cities, and museums with the largest number of uploaded paintings. By clicking „paintings” in the list, you will see a thumbnail gallery of uploaded paintings for the selected country, city, or museum indexed by artist name. In the museums list, you can also click the name of the museum to be directed to its profile page (See 4.4. Museum profile).

If you are looking for a specific country, city, or museum you can easily find it by clicking “Search”. Select the country, city, or museum in the popup window to instantly display information about the location.

2.3. Advanced search

The advanced search function gives you the full access to the site’s powerful search engine. You can filter uploaded paintings by artist nationality, movement, theme, technique, and location (country, city, or museum). You can perform simple filtering (e.g. German paintings) or you can also do complex filtering (e.g. German abstract surrealist paintings in Cologne, Germany). Click „Select” next to the categories you wish to filter and select the nationality, movement, theme, technique, and location you are looking for. After setting the filters, click the „Search” button to see a thumbnail gallery of the paintings which fit the criteria you set.

2.4. Painting profile

The painting profile page lists all the available information about a painting. On the upper-left side you will see a photo of the painting (click on the image to display it in its original size). If you like the painting, you can cast your vote by clicking on the numbers right below the image (you must be logged in).

There are four icons below the painting (Add info – Report misuse – Add tag – Add to gallery). These options are only available to users who have logged in.

Add info: If you have interesting information about the painting (a description, critique, explanation about its symbolism, story, etc.), you can share this knowledge with other visitors. This description, after a quick technical check by the site's administrator, will appear on the page next to the painting's image and will help other visitors gain a better understanding of this work of art. If you just have some remarks and comments about the painting you can post them in the comments section below. Do not hesitate to post new info even if there is already a description about the painting. If there is new information in your post, it will be merged into the existing text.

Report misuse: It is possible that you come across some uploads which, due to their nature, clearly do not belong on this site. If you feel this is necessary, please click on this button to help us keep this site enjoyable.

Add tag: Tags are relevant keywords (one-word descriptions) that you can add to any painting. Tags can describe specific attributes (e.g. funny, melancholic, etc.), dominant colors (e.g. black, pink, etc.), objects in the painting (e.g. horses, ships, etc.), or anything else that comes to mind when examining the work.

You can add tags to a painting by clicking „Add tag” below its image. Type the tag in the pop-up window (remember, one word per tag) and click „Send”. If you want to add more than one tag at a time, you can do so; just separate them with spaces.

The tags associated with a particular painting are displayed to the right of the painting's image in the „Search for similar images” section (See Search for similar images).

Add to gallery: If you like the painting you can add it to your personal gallery by clicking „Add to gallery”. The painting will automatically be added to your „Main gallery” but you can transfer it at any time to any of your other galleries (See 9.2. My gallery). After adding a painting to your gallery, the „Add to gallery” text will change to „Already in your gallery” to remind you that the picture has already been added to your gallery.

Comments: On the lower-left side of the page you will find the comment area for the painting. You can view all of them or choose a specific language to read comments written only in that language. If you are logged in, you can post a comment and select its language. Comments, unlike descriptions (See „Add info”), will appear instantly.

Clicking the theme or the technique will give you thumbnails of paintings in the same theme or technique, respectively. By clicking the name of the museum where the painting is located, you will be directed to the museum's profile page (See 4.4. Museum profile). Finally, you may click the country or city to see a thumbnail gallery of paintings from that country or city.

Description: Below the basic details you will find a description of the painting (if any). Descriptions can be provided by the uploader, or later by any registered visitor who clicks the „Add info” button below the image (See „Add info”). Details about the painting, its creation, history, theories about its symbolism and generally, all useful information is most welcome and will certainly be appreciated by other visitors. Do not hesitate to post new info even if there is already a description about the painting. In case there is some new information in your post, it will be merged into the existing text.

Unique URL: You can copy this line to any document or browser. This URL identifies the page you are visiting at the moment.

Search for similar paintings: The tags associated with the painting are displayed under the „Search for similar paintings” section. Check one or more of the checkboxes next to each tag and click „Search” to display a thumbnail gallery of paintings which have the same tag (or tags) associated with them. If you check more than one box, the site will search for paintings which have been associated with all the selected tags.

The first two were painted by the same artist, the third and fourth were painted in the same artistic movement, the fifth and sixth have the same theme, the seventh and eights were painted with the same technique, while the last two paintings have some similar tags. Below each thumbnail you will find some important details (artist, title, date, movement, theme, and technique) about the picture. You can also check the number of views and the number of votes. If you click any of the thumbnails, or the title of the painting below it, you will be directed to the painting's profile page (See 2.4. Painting profile). If you click the name of the artist you will see the artist's profile page (See 3.4. Artist profile).

6. THE FUN MENU

6.1. Quiz

The Quiz is a simple but very enjoyable multiple choice game. You will see a question and four possible answers. You have twenty seconds to find the correct one.

7. THE ART MENU

The art menu contains some fine content for art enthusiasts. If you are such an enthusiast, you may consider contributing some content.

7.1. Exhibitions

In the Exhibitions section, you can learn about ongoing temporary exhibitions in museums around the world. You can search for exhibitions in a specific museum, city or country. Exhibitions are listed by their closing date, so the closer the last exhibition day, the higher it will be in the list. Click on the museum's name to see the museum's profile page. If you click „more...” in the list of exhibitions you will see detailed information about that exhibition.

It is possible that you come across some uploads which, due to their nature, clearly do not belong on this site. If you feel this is necessary, please click on “Remove exhibition” to help us keep this site enjoyable.

Click the „Exhibition news archive” tab to list exhibitions which are no longer on show.

You are also encouraged to upload new temporary exhibitions. After logging in (See 8. Registration and Login), click the „Add new exhibition” tab to start uploading.

When uploading an exhibition you will need the following information:

  • Title of the exhibition – required
  • Opening and closing date of the exhibition – required
  • The museum where the temporary exhibition is displayed – required
  • Lead – a short description of the exhibition – optional
  • Content – Detailed information about the exhibition – optional
  • An image (picture) about the exhibition – optional

Title: Type the title of the exhibition in English, if possible.

Opening and closing date: Select the opening and the closing date of the exhibition. Exhibitions are listed according to their closing day. The sooner the closing day, the higher it will be in the list.

Museum: Select the museum where the temporary exhibition is displayed. You can only select museums already in the database, so if you are aware of a temporary exhibition in a museum that has not yet been uploaded, then you should first upload the museum (See 10.3. Uploading museums) and then upload the exhibition.

Lead: The lead is a short summary of the exhibition. The lead will be displayed in the list of exhibitions briefing visitors about the most important message of the exhibition.

Content: In the content field you can enter full explanation, details, description etc. about the exhibition.

Image: You can also upload an image for the exhibition. Browse for the image file on your computer.

You are also encouraged to add glossary entries to the list. After logging in click „Add new glossary entry” to upload a new term. The new glossary entry will appear in the list after a quick technical check by the site's administrator. Please, upload only English entries.

7.3. Library

The library contains books, studies, essays, presentations, etc. in just about any field of art. These texts help you gain deeper understanding of a specific field.

The texts in the library are sorted by language and date of upload. After selecting language texts will be displayed according to their upload date with the most recent texts at the top of the list.

You are also encouraged to upload your own books, essays and texts to the site. When uploading text file (you must be logged in) the following data will be needed:

  • Title of the document – required
  • A short abstract of the text with the most important points and ideas – required
  • Language of the text – required
  • The document file – required

Title: The title of the document should be meaningful and in the same language as the document itself.

Abstract: The abstract is a summary of the ideas and points explained in the main document. It is a vital tool to introduce the ideas to other visitors who will in most cases use the summary to decide whether to read the entire document. A good abstract may result in a lot of readers, so make sure your abstract is clear and interesting. The abstract should be between 200 and 500 characters.

Language: Select the language of your text. This will help visitors download texts in a language they are proficient in.

Document: Browse for the text file on your computer. You will be able upload files with PDF (Portable Document File), DOC (Microsoft Word), ODT (Open Document Text), RTF (Rich Text File) and ZIP extensions.

11. UPLOADING

Uploading is one of the most exciting features of the site. It gives a fine opportunity for less-known artists to show their works and also a cool way for young, wannabe painters to introduce themselves to the World. When designing the features of the site, we tried to balance general user-friendliness with the advanced search functionality required for the rather large database we are dealing with. We hope that the uploading feature illustrates these efforts. Remember, in order to upload you will have to register and log in to the site.

Along with paintings, you can also upload artists and (portrait, curriculum vitae, etc.) museums (location, opening hours, etc.) too. This is important because when you are uploading a painting, you will have to choose the artist from a list of previously uploaded artists. Accordingly, if you want to upload a painting of an artist who is not yet in the database, then you should start by adding the painter and then you can associate his or her name with the painting you upload. Use the same sequence with the museums. If the painter and/or museum of the painting is unknown, then you can start uploading right away. If you are new to this site, you may want to use the upload-wizard which walks you through the process step-by-step.

11.1. Uploading paintings

When uploading a painting the following data will be needed:

  • Title of the painting – required
  • Name of the artist – required
  • Name of the museum where the painting is located (you will also find a "Private Collection, and an "Unknown" option) – required
  • The country and the city where the museum is located (you will also find an "Unknown" option) – required
  • Date of the painting – optional
  • The artistic movement in which the painting belongs (e.g. Impressionism) – required
  • Theme of the painting (e.g. Portrait) – required
  • Technique (e.g. Pencil) – required
  • The picture file about the painting (in jpg, png or gif  format) – required
  • Tags – optional
  • Description of the painting – optional

Uploading is much easier than it may seem from the amount of data required, since in most cases you will have to simply choose from predefined categories. This significantly simplifies the process and at the same time also greatly enhances the search functions of the database. If you are new to this site, you may want to use the upload-wizard which walks you through the process step-by-step.

Title of the painting: ype the title of the painting in English, if possible. If you upload a detail of a painting, then please write „(detail)” after the title, so that other visitors can easily recognize it. This field is required.

Name of the artist: In order to enter the name of the painter, you must select his or her name from a list instead of typing it in to a text field. This method greatly increases the efficiency of the search function by eliminating spelling mistakes/variations in the names of artists.

To choose an artist click „Select” next to the text field. In the popup window, click on the first letter of the last name of the artist to see an alphabetical list from which you can select the artist. It is possible that the required name is not on the list, which means that the artist is not yet in the system. In this case you must first upload the artist and then come back to continue uploading the painting. In a few cases, instead of the standard form of the name, you will find the most popular or well-known form (e.g. when looking for Leonardo, you will find him under „L” as Leonardo da Vinci instead of „V”, which would come from the standard form of Vinci, Leonardo da) so make sure to check this if you don't seem to find someone. This field is required.

Museum: In order to enter the name of the museum (gallery, church, cathedral, exhibition room, etc.) where the painting is located, you must select its name from a list instead of typing it into a text field. This method greatly increases the efficiency of the search function by eliminating spelling mistakes/variations in the names of museums.

To choose a museum, click „Select” next to the field. In the popup window, click on the first letter of the name of the museum to see an alphabetical list from which you can select the museum. It is possible that the required name is not on the list, which means that the museum is not yet in the system. In this case you must first upload the artist and then come back to continue uploading the painting. If the painting is in private hands, choose the „Private Collection” option and a later you may still indicate the city and/or country where the painting is located. If you do not know the location of the painting, use the „Unknown” option. This field is required.

Country and city: If you selected a museum in the previous step then you have nothing to do, since the system will fill these boxes in automatically. However, if you selected „Private Collection” or „No info” above, you must specify the city and/or country where you think the painting is located. To select a country, click any letter of the alphabet in the popup window and then click the country of your choice. If you also want to select a city after selecting a country, make sure to select one that is located in the country you previously selected. Otherwise, the system will overwrite your country selection with the name the country where the selected city is located. The „No info” option is available if you have no clue about the location of the painting.

While our database lists all independent countries of the World you will certainly find missing cities, especially smaller ones. If you want to upload a painting which is located in a town that is not listed in the database, please, send us an email and we will be happy to add it. This field is required.

Date of the painting: Enter the date when the painting was painted. This is a text field so you can type in any format you like (e.g. 1458, c.1458, 1458-1459, etc.). This field is optional.

Movement: In order to enter the name of the historical art movement which characterizes the painting, you have to select its name from a list instead of typing it in to a text field. This method greatly increases the efficiency of the search function by eliminating spelling mistakes/variations in the names of art movements.

To choose the movement click „Select” next to the field. In the popup window, select the movement from the alphabetical list. Check the upper-left box to see available movements in chronological order. If the painting belongs to a very recent or a rather marginal movement that you cannot find in the list, choose “Other/Unknown” and send us an email so that we can add the new movement to the list. This field is required.

Theme: In order to enter the theme of the painting, you must select its name from a list instead of typing it in to a text field. This method greatly increases the efficiency of the search function by eliminating spelling mistakes/variations in the themes.

To select the theme click „Select” next to the field. In the popup window, browse the alphabetical list and select the theme that best describes the painting. This field is required.

Technique: In order to enter the technique with which the painting was created, you must select its name from a list instead of typing it in to a text field. This method greatly increases the efficiency of the search function by eliminating spelling mistakes/variations in the techniques.

To select the technique click „Select” next to the field. In the popup window, browse the alphabetical list and select the technique with which the painting was created. If the painting was created with some technique that you do not find in the list, choose “Other/Unknown” and send us an email so that we can add the new technique.

This field is required.

Picture: Browse for the picture file on your computer (you can upload JPG, PNG and GIF files, maximum size is 500 KByte). This field is required.

Tags: Tags are relevant keywords associated with a painting. Entering relevant tags will help other visitors find the pictures they are looking for. For example, if the painting you are uploading shows dogs chasing a fox, you may choose “Animals” as the theme while typing “dogs” and “fox” in the tags field. Such tagging will help visitors find the picture as they search for „dogs” and/or „fox”. Every word you type in (separate them with a space) counts as a different tag. You can add tags to any painting at anytime, so you can always come back later to the painting profile page and add a tag you may have missed while uploading. This field is optional.

Description: In the description field you may write freely about the painting you upload. Any information or story about its creation, subject, history, restoration, etc. is most welcome and will certainly be appreciated by other visitors. You will be able to add descriptions to any painting at anytime on its profile page. To do so click „Add info”, type the description in the popup window and click „Send”. In this case your description will appear after a quick technical check by the site's administrator, but a description added during upload appears instantly. This field is optional.

11.2. Uploading artists

When uploading an artist the following data will be needed:

  • Name of the artist – required
  • (primary) Nationality – required
  • Secondary nationality (if any) – optional
  • Date of birth and death – optional
  • Portrait of the artist (in jpg, png or gif format) – optional
  • Tags – optional
  • Description – optional

Uploading is much easier than it may seem from the amount of data required, since in most cases you will have to simply choose from predefined categories. This significantly simplifies the process and at the same time also greatly enhances the search functions of the database. If you are new to this site, you may want to use the upload-wizard which walks you through the process step-by-step. Also, please make sure that the artist you want to upload is not already in the system, perhaps under some different spelling variations. Your effort will contribute to the integrity of the database and will be appreciated by all visitors.

Name of the artist: Type the name of the artist. Make sure that you are using the standard dictionary form (e.g the name „Filippo Lippi” should appear in the form of „Lippi, Filippo”). This is important because all alphabetical lists will be generated on the basis of the first character of the name you enter. This field is required.

(Primary) Nationality: To select the nationality of the artist click „Select” next to the field. Next, select the appropriate nationality from the alphabetical list in the popup window. A lot of artist have more than one nationality. For this field, please select the one you think is/was dominant in his or her life. In the next field you will be able to specify a second nationality if necessary. This field is required.

Secondary nationality: A number of artists have more than one nationality (e.g. born in France but lived and worked in Russia). In this field you can specify the artist's secondary (perhaps less dominant) nationality if there is any. This field is optional.

Date of birth (and death) of the artist: Enter the date of birth (and death) of the artist. This is a text field, so you can type in any format you like (e.g. 1975, c.1458, 1458-1512, etc.). This field is optional.

Portrait of the artist: Here you can upload a portrait of the artist in the form of a picture file. This can be a self portrait, a portrait painted by another artist, or a photo. If you forget to upload a portrait or if you want to add a portrait to an artist uploaded by someone else, you can do so at anytime by sending the picture file to the administrator. This field is optional.

Tags: Tags are relevant keywords associated with an artist. Entering relevant tags will help other visitors learn more about the artists. (e.g. the young Leonardo da Vinci was an apprentice at the workshop of Verrocchio. Adding the tag „Verrocchio” to Leonardo may help visitors realize this interesting fact, since Leonardo will come up whenever someone searches for the tag „Verrocchio”.) Every word you type in (separate them with a space) counts as a different tag. You can add tags to any artist at anytime, so you can always come back later to the artist profile page and add a tag you may have missed while uploading. This field is optional.

Description: In the description field you may write freely about the artist you upload. Any information or story about his or her life is most welcome and will certainly be appreciated by other visitors. You will be able to add descriptions to any artist at anytime on his or her profile page. To do so click „Add info”, type the description in the popup window and click „Send”. In this case your description will appear after a quick technical check by the site's administrator, but a description added during upload appears instantly. This field is optional.

  • Country where the museum is located – required
  • Website of the museum – optional

This significantly simplifies the process and at the same time also greatly enhances the search functions of the database. If you are new to this site, you may want to use the upload-wizard which walks you through the process step-by-step. Also, please make sure that the museum you want to upload is not already in the system, perhaps under some different spelling variations. Your effort will contribute to the integrity of the database and will be appreciated by all visitors.

Name of the museum: Type the name of the museum here. Use the English name if it is accepted and widely used, but do not hesitate to enter its national name if it is more often used (e.g. Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Germany). Before uploading make sure that the given museum is not already in the database. This field is required.

City where the museum is located: To select the city where the museum is located click on the „Select” button next to the field. Next, an alphabetical list will pop up where you can choose one of the cities in the country you have just selected. While the list of cities increases every day, it is possible that the city you are looking for is not yet in the system. If so, send us an e-mail and we will be happy to list it. This field is required.

Country where the museum is located: To select the country where the museum is located click „Select” next to the field. Next, select the appropriate country from the alphabetical list in the popup window. This field is required.

Description: In the description field you may write freely about the museum you upload. Any information, story, or - maybe even more importantly - review is most welcome and will certainly be appreciated by other visitors. You will be able to add descriptions to any museum at anytime on its profile page. To do so click the „Add info” button, type the description in the popup window and click „Send”. In this case your description will appear after a quick technical check by the site's administrator, but a description added during upload appears instantly. This field is optional.
