Paintings today..
Feb 8, 2008
Hello everyone!
I also support the idea that paintings are not dead. Take for example my grandfather who is a self-educated painter. The only things he uses are canvas, oil paint and brush.
He uses only three things and creates a whole new universe. He has probably reached his peak of talent as he is now confident in painting portraits which he considers the hardest of all. At the same time I agree that we have to go with time that is we have to improve and this contains very new, extreme methods, too.
Personally, I like action painting and photorealistic painting the most.

Hello GoEast,

of course you can reproduce 3D artwork in 2D I just have an impression that it is more a reduction than a reproduction. As for the title, why don't you use some numbering (like Self Portrait No 1.)?

I disagree with your view on the unpopularity of paintings these days. If you check the visitor history of fine art museums in Europe or in the US you will see steadily and strongly increasing numbers. Prices of  paintings (both old masters and contemporary) are sky-rocketing and other art related businesses (like museum shops) are thriving.

WGA is a great site we like it a lot. TerminArtors, however, have some remarkable features which differentiates it from WGA and, as a matter of fact, most other virtual gallery we are aware of.

- TerminArtors covers fine arts from the very beginnings to the very present. Many galleries, including WGA, cuts a line at somewhere at the 19. century.

- We have put a great effort making the database fully searchable. You can search for all attributes of a painting and when you upload a painting  most of these attributes must be selected (versus typed in) so no misspelling or alternate naming (e.g. Uffizi Gallery vs. Galleria Uffizi) is possible. This protocol keeps the database intact and fully searchable. Advanced search (multiple indicing) is also available.

- Finally, and most importantly, you can upload paintings which we consider a great feature. Since the start of the site (late autumn last year) visitors uploaded more than 4,000 paintings and more than 100 museums and new artists. We see this contribution of our visitors as a vital and most remarkable result. Uploading increases the content of the site day by day and this is possibly one of the most important feature of a community site like ours.

Keep posting, I like your points!

Re: Re: specific problems

Hello!
I dont want to go into a deep discussion about the reproduction of art.
Just one point to add: If you can reproduce a sculpture (3D) in a book (2D), you can do it on the screen (2D) as well. (The same for videos, showing ca. 3 stills is enough)
2. It would be useful to be able to upload more than one picture per title. Take my example of Sibillye Hofter: I wanted to upload the Gummibabies in close up (as a sculpture), on the streets (as part of a site specific performance) and in the gallery (as artwork represented in the museum space). I think, this is the only way of understanding a contemporary artwork. (But I couldn't do it under the same title, which causes the impression of being different works of art.)
3. We have to admit that paintings are not that current nowadays. If you want your site to become popular for art of our days you have improve your site this way. If you don't, what's the advantage to wga.hu where people don't even have to contribute to get the same content ?
I hope, everyone appriciates my efforts staying international
Cheers,
go_east

p.s.: i think artwork is a great world.

Hello GoEast,

presently you cannot directly edit previously uploaded staff. If there is some correction to be made send it to Linda (linda@terminartors.com) and she will be happy to do that.

Thank you for the "complex" remark, it is a very good point. When designing the site we had the following considerations:

- We think that a 2D display (like the screen) is most fit to present (reproductions of ) 2D artworks. A 3D sculpture e.g. has mass, has preferred viewpoints (or none at all!) which makes it immensely more difficult to present in 2D. We found that a 2D reproduction of a 2D artwork can better convey the inherent magnificence of the original that that of a 3D work. Nevertheless, we have a small number of sculpture, coin, etc. images, so we do not prohibit this.

- Also, there is a copyright issue. US copyright law (considered widely as the most elaborated law of its kind) says that faithful (or "slavish") reproductions of 2D artworks do not carry enough originality to fall under copyright law. This is not the case when we are talking about reproductions of 3D artworks and even less the case when we are talking about videos (or music by the way ) when we would display not reproductions but the original artwork.

- We also have a wording problem as you may have noticed. We call all 2D artworks "paintings" although we are aware that a print, a collage, an etching, etc. is not a painting in the strict sense of the word. We considered replacing "painting" with "artwork" but we did not really like it.

Summarizing the above, we believe that this site is designed primarily for reproductions of 2D artworks. Still images of sculptures, installations, etc. are also welcome, but the the uploader must take utmost care to make sure no copyright laws are violated.

Thanks again for your points and do not hesitate comment.

specific problem
Feb 5, 2008
hey Matt, i have a specific problem.
how can i edit my already uploaded stuff? what, if i've found more detaild inforamtion? where to correct myself?
my second problem is more complex. i understand, that primaly you define art as a painting. and for sure, this site is mostly capable for uploading reproductions of paintings.
BUT:
if you would make able to upload more then one picture under the same title, sculptures, buildings, installations, performances, videos, etc... could be represented in a correct way aswell. this small informatic step would accuse a much liberaler view on art.
maybe it's the wrong forum for my problem, but think about it!
