Movement: Realism
Theme: Animals
Technique: Sculpture
Museum: Hungarian National Gallery
Location: Budapest, Hungary
Material: Cast bronze. Size: 89 mm. Pál Pátzay is a significant representative of monumental sculpture, but his Ady medal shows his mastery of medals, too. The artist has symbolized the often-attacked poetry of Ady with a horse startled bylightning, presumably inspired by Delacroix's water colour in the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts. Hungarian medal art has many representations of horses, but the perfect anatomical knowledge, excellent draughtsmanship and forceful plasticity make Pátzay's horse an exceptional piece. The obverse shows the poet in left profile.
