Notes: During their flight into Egypt to escape King Herod after Christ's birth, the Holy Family rests under a tree. Two angels kneel beside the Virgin and Child, gazing in adoration.
Albani was Annibale Carracci's assistant in Rome, and the influence of his master can be seen at work in this painting. It bears some resemblance to 'The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist', particularly in the figure of Saint Joseph.
While in Rome, Albani specialised in small 'cabinet' paintings and this intimate devotional work is one of his finest. The subject matter and composition is one to which he would constantly return throughout his career.
