Diana Machulina is one of the most recognizable Moscow artists of young generation. Born in the Ukraine in 1981, she has managed to get several art educations in Russia and Germany so she has become the really international artist. In 2008th Diana has been awarded with Kandinsky prize as the best young artist.
Diana Machulina could have become the art-icon of the new south-Russian wave, had it not been for three Moscow art-institutes and for the art academy in Stuttgart, which formed her international approach to visual language and did not leave any traces of the aesthetic legacy of her Lugansk childhood.
Diana Machulina's optics brings to the ordinary world the unexpected irrational inside, which the viewer begins to suspect looking attentively at the works of the artist. The viewer's suspicion of a more complicated lay-out of the world, than that which is visible, is the result of the foresight of the artist, the result of discovery of the metaphorical mechanisms, which control the life of beings sensitive to metaphors.
The art of Machulina shares with the viewer this gift of aesthetic sensitivity and causes doubt in that which is obvious. The gift of making the obvious and habitual strange lies at the base of the artist's poetics. Her works return reality to us, as something worrying and joyful, contrived frequently and in many different ways, and inexhaustibly dark in its secrecy.
