Born in 1971 in Bornem, Geert Goiris lives and works in Antwerp.
Primarily using photography, Goiris’ practice documents strange sites as well as unusual encounters with subjects that appear distinctly out of place, whether a rock formation, an abandoned house or an albino wallaby. His technique reflects the unnaturalness of the situations he records, using prolonged photographic exposure to lend his pictures a surreal quality.
Constantly traveling in search of images to complement his singular lexicon, Goiris is evolving a body of work, which he describes as "Traumatic Realism”. His works often represent alienated landscapes: empty fields, mountains and abandoned urban environments infused with nostalgia, solitude and drama. He also investigates derelict Modernist buildings, which stand as enduring reminders of the failings of great ideologies.
Geert Goiris has upcoming solo exhibitions at CAB, Burgos (2010) and KIOSK, Ghent (2010). Recent solo shows include “Whiteout and Other Stories” at Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg (2010), “Confabulation” at Kunstforum Baloise, Basel (2009), “Imagine There’s No Countries” at Le Crédac, Ivry-sur-Seine (2009) and “Whiteout #02” at Statements Art Basel, Basel (2009). His work has also been shown as part of “Beyond The Picturesque” at S.M.A.K, Gent and MARTA, Herford (2009), “Private/public” at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2007), “Croiser des mondes” at Jeu de Paume, Paris (2005), “Undercurrent” at Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, Istanbul (2004) and Manifesta 5, European Biennial for Contemporary Art, San Sebastian (2004). He has received the Baloise Art Prize at Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg (2010).
